Since a girl I had a love affair with the films of Audrey Hepburn, who still holds the unchallenged position as my style icon par excellence. The costumes that Audrey Hepburn dons in each of her movies has influenced my own shopping purchases. I thought that through the sartorial emulation of her characters' clothes, I too could take on the various personas and identities that Audrey played. After all, what is fashion and style but a sort of disguise or identity that one appropriates for oneself?
As I came to admire other actresses contemporary to or later than Audrey's time, I saw my style evolve and absorb the identities of various fictional characters whose lives I romanticized: Odile from Bande à part, Geneviève Emery from Les Parapluies de Cherbourg, Rosemary Woodhouse from Rosemary's Baby, Rose Pamphyle from Populaire and yes, even Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette.
I decided to create an inventory of my favorite pieces and what films and fictional characters I am reminded of when wearing them.
